It also offers some quick wood project ideas, like coasters and photo frames.
The author does an excellent job of breaking down every aspect of woodworking, providing easy-to-follow techniques, tips and tricks. The book includes exact cutting and materials lists, detailed schematics, 3D drawings and step-by-step blueprints. Although the diagrams are in black and white and not the most striking, they get the job done. By the end of the book, you’ll no longer see woodworking as a daunting craft, but rather, a skill that enables you to transform raw wood into something worthwhile.
Crafting With Wood Pallets – Becky Lamb
Packed with over 25 unique DIY projects, this book offers easy-to-follow instructions and vibrant colour photos. It’s perfect for those looking to turn simple pallets into practical, creative pieces. Projects include a charming jewellery organiser, a rustic coffee table and a chic wine bar.
Though the book is likely more suited to novice woodworkers, the clear guidance and accessible techniques make it an excellent resource for anyone eager to add a personal touch to their living space. Overall, Crafting with Wood Pallets is a must-have for anyone looking to give new life to old pallets.
Woodworking From Offcuts – Derek Jones
As the title suggests, this book focuses on projects made from wood scraps. With 20 different projects, it caters to woodworkers of all abilities, starting with simple bird boxes. Some projects are a bit more on the random side, but they are still fun to try.
The book is clear and straightforward, with full-colour visuals and a step-by-step guide to each project. There’s also a short section dedicated to tools and materials. However, some projects do require a well-stocked tool shed, so our library of tools may come in handy for those looking to dive in.
Outdoor Woodworking – Unauthored
This compilation features 20 inspiring outdoor projects from different woodworkers, suitable for both beginner and advanced crafters. The projects range from bird boxes to sheds and mini wheelbarrows, although most will require some prior woodworking experience.
The book is well-designed with full-color photos, step-by-step guides and detailed cutting lists and diagrams. However, the majority of the projects require power tools, so again, the OWR library of tools may come in handy.
The Big Book of Weekend Woodworking – John A. & Joyce C. Nelson
By far the largest of the five books we’ve reviewed, this one contains 150 projects, many of which are labelled as ‘easy.’ However, some of these projects are more challenging than they might first appear. The book is well-presented, although some of the ideas could feel a little dated.
It covers all the essentials, from selecting wood to gluing and finishing. There are plenty of wood projects for beginners like mirrors, shelves and jewellery boxes, while those with more experience can try a small cupboard or side table. Outdoor projects like weathervanes and plant stands are also included, as well as fun items for kids, such as pull toys and rocking chairs. Each project comes with decoration options, patterns and detailed instructions, making it a great resource for all skill levels.
