Oxford Wood Recycling named European Social Firm of the Year 2010.
We were very pleased to have been presented with the award and 800 euros at the European and UK Social Firms conference in Cambridge on July 3rd.
Chief executive Richard Snow said “ We’re delighted to have won this award for our staff, who own and control the business. We are a small business that sees the value in giving opportunity to people who have been out of work for a long time, often through illness. The company benefits hugely from their skills and experience, the workers benefit from worthwhile employment in an exciting environmental business, and the taxpayer gets savings in benefits for unemployment , disability and incapacity.
We may well have beaten off some very worthy competition by showing our sustainability in being totally independent of grant funding. If David Cameron wants some ideas for the ‘ Big Society’, we’d be pleased to show him around our warehouse and sell him some rescued timber to build a shed or a raised bed!“
We've been awarded the Social Enterprise Mark! - the brand for social enterprises that was launched in February 2010. The mark identifies businesses which meet defined criteria for social enteprise, and consumers will recognise that businesses displaying the Mark are trading to benefit people and planet.
Oxford Wood Recycling joins other ethical businesses that have been recognised by being awarded the Mark such as the Eden Project, Hill Holt Wood, Bristol Wood Recycling Project, Big Issue and the Co-operative Group South & West.Government data estimates that there are 62,000 social enterprises across the UK, contributing £24 billion to the economy and employing around 800,000 people.

Oxford Wood Recycling Ltd (OWR) reuses and recycles wood and timber, helping to reduce the amount of waste wood sent to landfill in Oxfordshire and West Berkshire.

We sell rescued wood
By careful sorting and processing of the waste wood we collect, we are able to supply a wide range of reclaimed timber and other wood materials for garden or household projects. Visit the wood shop to see some of our current stock.
Over the past 4 years our customers have brought new life to discarded wood by creating items for use indoors and out. Here are some examples of items that customers made with our wood

Firewood:
We sell kindling in 2.5kg bags, made with dry timber. We also supply firewood in 7.5 Kg bags from dry softwood timber offcuts - perfect for your garden chiminea this summer! Occasionally we have hardwood firewood offcuts as well.

Social Enterprise
Some of us at OWR have faced barriers to working, and as a Social Enterprise.
we actively try to help others find employment by offering work experience and volunteering opportunities. Our volunteers sometimes find jobs with us!
